That is an odd occurance, as I would expect it to go to 100% myself. I will forward this for further investigation.
On the other hand, you can disable a setting and then you will have complete control over the brightness of the screen.
- Go to Setttings
- Change PC settings
- General
- Screen
- Disable 'Adjust my screen brightness automatically'.

I was about to leave a negative review on amazon for the Aspire S7-392 because the brightness was driving me crazy, it had nothing on my old Vaio and I couldn't figure out why. For anyone else who experiences the same issue, Windows 8.1 has changed the options round a bit:

Swipe the right hand screen -> Settings -> Change PC Settings -> PC and Devices -> Power and Sleep -> uncheck automatically adjust brightness.
This may be good for battery life but it is not good when trying to code in sunlight! I can use FN left and right perfectly well
